You can still get your kicks on Route 66 in Amarillo.
In fact you can get more than your kicks, because there is over one mile of antique shops, restaurants, clubs and other shopping along a stretch of the original Route 66. Amarillo is the largest city on the 170 plus miles of Route 66 in Texas. Amarillo's Historic Route 66 is located along 6th Avenue, between Georgia and Western Streets.
The often romanticized Mother Road inspires in many of us a nostalgic bone which niggles at something buried deep within us. While some may see Route 66 as a link to our parents and grandparents, others perhaps feel the sense of freedom that the road provided to those early travelers.

Route 66 is no ordinary road, its 2,400 miles represent modern America's first highway infrastructure and marks the transition from dirt roads to super highways. Route 66 is the story of a newly mobile nation and of the democratization of travel.
