If you are in the area of Canyon, Texas (maybe you are site seeing the beautiful Palo Duro Canyon), or if you live there or in Amarillo, there is a wonderful restaurant named, "Feldman's Wrong Way Diner". It was named from the character on Gilligan's Island, nicknamed Wrong Way Feldman. Remember him? Maybe, not if you are younger than 50 years old! Wrong Way Feldman was only in a few of the episodes. Back to the restaurant, the food there is very good.
An informal dinner with a sense of fun, the Diner has trademark Wrong Way signs everywhere and comfortable booth seating. Its big, juicy hamburgers are a popular pick and weigh in at half a pound. The restaurant is clean and has a train running the course of the ceiling that kids will enjoy.
When we dined there, Ron had the catfish wrap. It is crispy and almost sinful. The dish consists of fried catfish stuffed into a big tortilla and topped with cilantro sauce, tomatoes, and cheese. Some of the best catfish that "catfish freak " Ron has had in the Panhandle. Carol enjoyed the chicken fried steak very much.
One of the things that impressed the most was the wonderful side dishes from which to choose. There are lots of vegetables and even a great broccoli rice casserole.
Perplexedly, the diner lists high-fat dishes like hamburgers and fried chicken on its "Light Menu." Maybe it's part of the "wrong way" theme. Of course, the portions are smaller so the lunch or dinner is lighter. There is also a child menu....we hope to take the grandchildren next time.
If you are traveling from Amarillo going south or coming to Amarillo from the south, Feldman's is a great place to stop for some down home cooking with a really creative touch. Feldman's is one of the most popular dining establishments in the Texas Panhandle, The Locals Go Here" in droves.
