Acapulco Restaurant - Amarillo
Review by Ron and Carol

A Downtown  Amarillo Tradition

No Group Too Large or Small -  Catering For Your Special Event

This restaurant is well known by the locals. We have been there and enjoyed our visit.

There is nothing flashy about the decor or about the plate presentation, this is about the food. Great flavors, quality products, and ample portions.  The fajitas were enough for two people, but we usually want left overs for the nest day.   The various garnishes, including shredded cheese, allowed for different taste combinations. The service is usually efficient and with a pleasant smile. The price was typical for similar restaurants but a good value for the amount of food taken home. The various options for beverages, including a wide offering of Mexican beers and Margaritas, was an added plus. We didn't have room for dessert but they offer a variety.

On our last visit, Ron had a sour cream chicken enchilada that was tasty, smooth and filling.  Carol had a taco platter.  We both sort of missed the fajitas, but certainly could not complain about the quality of either of our orders.

The interior reminds us of a real Mexican eatery with loud noises from all corners, a water fountain in the middle of the main dining room, murals of the Mexican coast on the walls, Mexican music blaring a tad too loudly and inexpensive  table dressings.  All that make real Mexican restaurants an ethnic experience that must be enjoyed and we enjoyed it all.

Acapulco is a great addition to the come back of down Amarillo.  You can tell this place is a favorite of many. It was the only place on a Sunday afternoon that has any cars in front of it.

Our favorite cheap date night place:  On Fridays and some Saturdays you can listen to Victor Gallegos, who plays some light rock and country on his acoustic guitar, and it is the perfect accompanyment to the wonderful food.   Also on the weekends there is also a strolling Maraichi  band for an authentic atmosphere.  The service is generally excellent, about 1 out of every 10 visits do have some patience, because they may have a large party or a new server, but this is really no big deal compared to the value and the food!
